MA in Applied Theology - Introduction
IBI is committed to an approach to study that engages head (mind), heart (attitudes) and hands (skills). Our aim is to develop the ability to move easily between these different aspects of Christian training and formation. We want to equip students to be able to bridge the gap between 'Word' and 'world' and so develop in their ability to relate biblical truth relevantly and critically to our contemporary context. This MA programme will extend this approach to the postgraduate level.
This MA programme is designed to enable students to critically reflect on a variety of aspects of contemporary mission and ministry in Ireland. All of the courses have a significant biblical input; they are also rooted in the context of the contemporary Irish scene. You will be encouraged and enabled to apply the insights of both Scripture and other disciplines not only to yourself, but to the wider context of your mission and ministry. It is one of the aims of the programme that the fruit of such study and research will provide significant resources for the Irish church as it faces the challenges of the 21st century.
Practical training has always been an emphasis at IBI. That will not be overlooked in the MA programme. One of the courses students will be required to complete will be a specific practical assignment with accompanying critical reflection. Each of the other courses will have practical dimensions and will be related to your ministry.
In the third year of the programme students will have an opportunity to research a topic of their own interest. This will be a great opportunity for further critical reflection on ministry or simply an opportunity to pursue an area of interest at this level.
