Intoduction to MAP

Formal training at a Bible College, such as IBI, is a great experience for anyone who desires professional and specialized training in biblical and theological studies.  At IBI, we believe we have one of the best programmes for equipping men and women for Christian service in Ireland.  Our aim at IBI is to produce a holistic and integrative approach to Christian Education by linking the intellect with passion and action.  Achieving this goal is a challenge to any institution of higher learning and we believe we accomplish this through the MAP.

MAP is the balance to formal classroom instruction.  It is designed specifically to help the student grow and mature as a follower of Christ, integrating what is being learned in the classroom into a meaningful unity with their "heart and hands".  As the name implies, the programme is developed around a mentoring (or discipling) relationship between the student and someone of their choosing (Mentor) as well as reflective practice in a ministry environment.

Mentors chosen by students come from all walks of life: ministers, elders, deacons, friends, colleagues, and peers.  These relationships of mutual edification and accountability are frequently mentioned by students as the highlight of their experience at IBI.  It is evident from student feedback that the MAP is instrumental in helping to maintain and guard the hearts of students (Phil. 4:7).  I believe this is a result of a healthy "triadic" relationship that is developed over time between the student, the mentor, and the Holy Spirit.

Is the MAP a novel idea?  We don't think so.  We believe we are merely encouraging the type of training that both the Lord Jesus and the apostle  Paul exemplified in their own lives and ministries.  It is within the context of trusting relationships that character formation and christian maturity is most easily recognized, encouraged, and developed.

Mentoring & Apprenticeship - Student Comments

"I found MAP to be a great help in reflecting on how each module I was studying was impacting my walk with God. The reflective practise assignments that we worked on were very helpful to consider how my head, heart and hands were being affected. Each module touched on all three aspects of my walk with God and MAP helped me to think and record how that was happening. The mentor relationship was a brilliant time to sit and get Godly advice on the things I was struggling with."

MAP What's it all about?

Spiritual character formation is an essential part of both preparing for and participating in Christian ministry. At IBI we want all of our students not just to develop their minds, but also to grow in their relationship with God and to be able to put into practice the insights and skills they are developing.
